After her girlfriend leaves her for an ex, Kelly takes off with her mustang, Shoni, and as many of her things as she can pack into her truck. The flip of a coin has her going west along I-70 from her home in Missouri, sending her toward Colorado. While driving through Dove Creek, she gets a flat tire on her trailer. She has a spare, but in his panic, Shoni manages to jerk the trailer enough to damage the wheel.

Her salvation comes in the form of sexy mechanic, Brigid, who owns a shop nearby. With a few days to wait for the wheel, the two get to know each other. A bit of fun isn’t all Brigid wants from her, but Kelly isn’t ready to jump into anything new so soon after her break up, and when Brigid offers her a job, Kelly doesn’t want to tie her life to someone so completely again.

Kelly is in need of some stability, and that’s exactly what Brigid is offering her. If she’s willing to take a chance on letting another woman into her life again, Brigid might be just who she needs.

They got out of the truck and started heading toward me. I remembered that I knew manners somewhere around the time that Brigid was five feet away from me. She had deeply tanned skin that was close to olive, so it had to be at least somewhat genetic instead of from years spent out in the sun. There were plenty of dirt and grease smears on her skin, which I could see a lot of because she had her jumpsuit wrapped around her waist, leaving her in just a black sports bra. Small, firm breasts, a great smile that was already half a smirk, dirty fingernails, and I was struggling not to sound like an idiot when she came up and stuck her hand out for me to shake.

“Hey, I’m Brigid.”

“Kelly.” I wanted to hang on to her hand, but she pulled it away and wiped it on her pant leg.

“Sorry. I was working on an old beater.”

I didn’t mind in the least.

“Looks like you could use a new wheel. I’ve got one that should work. If not, I can always order the part from Denver. Are you in a hurry?”

I quickly shook my head. I had no plans to be anywhere, and the way she smiled at me made me think I didn’t want to be anywhere else for a while either. It was nice to be smiled at like that again.

This author has a smooth easy to read writing style. No sooner had I turned the first page I was turning the last. The first half of this very short story focuses on the main character, Kelly, and her horse, Shoni. Shoni is vividly described, from his blonde hair/mane to the red flecks of hair, how he travels, what spooks him, how high a fence needs to be to keep him enclosed. In fact, by the end of this story I knew the horse more intimately than the ladies. Horse lovers will be enthralled.

After breaking down in the middle of nowhere land, a pretty damsel comes to Kelly and Shoni’s rescue. Brigid informs Kelly she will be stranded for two days until she can’t get the parts in to repair the horse trailer. Bridget opens her home up to Kelly and things move quickly. There’s a very brief sex scene, offer of a job, a place to rent over Brigid’s father’s home, and talk of let’s see where this goes.

I’m partial to short stories and have read many that leave me feeling satisfied. However, Roadside Rescue felt like reading a chapter out of the middle of a story. There’s no build up and no real conclusion, I guess you could say it has a happy for now ending.

Recommended to horse lovers looking for a quick read with a touch of spice.
